Three-dimensional hardwood carving

From 2D Artwork to 3D CNC Wood Carving in Hawaiʻi
A flat logo or emblem contains visual information, but it does not automatically contain the depth, surface transitions, or construction details needed to become a carved wooden object.
For this project, CNC Wood Arts received an emblem requested by a United States Navy lieutenant for their group. The original design was converted into a three-dimensional model, machined from solid sapele hardwood, and finished with a satin clear coat.
The project demonstrates the complete path from graphic artwork to a finished dimensional carving.
Converting Artwork Into a Buildable 3D Model
The first step was rebuilding the supplied design as three-dimensional geometry in Fusion 360.
This stage determines how each part of the emblem rises from the background, how the different levels transition, and how much detail can be reproduced by the available cutting tools. Areas that appear clear in a flat image may overlap or become visually confusing once depth is introduced.
The model must also account for the physical material. Extremely thin features may be fragile, while deep vertical walls can be difficult to machine cleanly. Digital modeling allows these issues to be addressed before wood is placed on the machine.

Building the Sapele Blank
The GavinWood team milled and glued sapele lumber into a slab approximately 1¾ inches thick.
Creating a stable blank is a critical part of dimensional CNC carving. Board orientation, grain direction, glue joints, final thickness, and the location of the carving all influence the finished piece.
Sapele was well suited to the project because its color and grain give the emblem a substantial architectural presence. The satin clear finish later protected the surface while allowing the hardwood to remain visually dominant.

Roughing and Detail Machining
Three-dimensional carving generally happens through multiple machining stages.
A roughing operation removes the majority of the unwanted stock efficiently, leaving a controlled amount of material around the final form. Finishing operations then use smaller tools and closer toolpath spacing to resolve the modeled surfaces and finer details.
Tool diameter, tool shape, stepover, grain direction, and the desired amount of hand finishing all affect the result. A smaller tool can capture tighter detail, but it also requires more machining time.

Where 3D CNC Carving Can Be Used
This same workflow can support:
Dimensional business logos
Military and organizational emblems
Sculptural wall panels
Custom doors and entry features
Hospitality and retail branding
Relief artwork
Decorative architectural components
Molds and production patterns
CNC machining provides repeatable geometry, but the finished character still depends on material selection, assembly, sanding, edge work, and finish.
Custom CNC Carving on Oʻahu
CNC Wood Arts combines CAD development, CNC machining, woodworking, assembly, and finishing for custom carving projects in Hawaiʻi.
You do not need to arrive with a production-ready 3D model. Projects can begin with a drawing, logo, reference image, vector file, or existing CAD model. We can evaluate what must be developed before the design becomes machinable.
To discuss a dimensional carving, send us the available artwork, approximate size, preferred material, quantity, deadline, and intended installation.
