Custom CNC Wood Engraving in Hawaiʻi: A Monkeypod Bar Project

Monkeypod is one of Hawaiʻi’s most recognizable hardwoods. Its sweeping grain, contrasting color, and natural variation make every slab distinct—but those same qualities require careful planning when adding a precisely machined logo or graphic.

For this project, Haleiwa Distillery supplied monkeypod slabs intended for a custom bar. Our role was to CNC-engrave its logo into the wood, creating clean recessed geometry that could later be filled with resin.

Preparing Natural Wood for CNC Engraving

A digital logo may look simple on a screen, but preparing it for CNC machining requires several decisions.

The artwork must be converted into clean, machinable geometry. Very narrow lines, tight corners, and small gaps may need adjustment based on the cutting tool and the intended engraving depth. The design must retain its identity while becoming practical to cut and finish.

Natural slabs introduce another variable: the surface may not be perfectly flat. Before engraving begins, the position and orientation of the artwork must be coordinated with the actual slab, its usable area, and the movement of the grain.

Machining the Logo

Once the digital file and physical setup were confirmed, the logo was machined directly into the monkeypod.

Tool selection affects the character of the finished engraving. A smaller cutting tool can preserve detail, while a larger tool removes material more efficiently. Depth also matters: the recess must be deep enough to hold the intended resin fill without unnecessarily weakening or dominating the surface.

Secure fixturing is essential. The slab must remain stable throughout the machining process so the engraved edges stay clean and accurately aligned.

Preparing the Engraving for Resin

CNC machining created a controlled recess for the resin inlay. After cutting, the engraved areas could be cleaned, sealed as needed, filled with resin, and finished flush with the surrounding wood.

The final result combines three visual layers:

  • The natural movement of the monkeypod grain

  • The precision of the machined logo

  • The color and depth introduced by the resin fill

This approach works particularly well for hospitality interiors, custom bars, reception desks, branded wall panels, restaurant tables, signage, and other architectural features where identity must become part of the material itself.

CNC Engraving Services on Oʻahu

CNC Wood Arts provides custom CNC engraving and fabrication for architects, designers, contractors, artists, hospitality businesses, and millwork partners throughout Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi.

Projects can begin with a vector logo, drawing, reference image, CAD file, or early concept. We can help evaluate the artwork, material, scale, machining strategy, and finishing requirements before production begins.
